ALGEBRA SKILLS
This section covers the basic skills you need to do algebra. The skills in this section prepare you for answering the test questions here and the ones you will find in the following sections: WORD PROB and GRAPHING.
It is important to distinguish between expressions, equations, and inequalities. Algebraic expressions are involve an unknown but have no equal sign. They can be simplified but not solved. Algebraic equations do have an equal sign, and can usually be solved for a numerical value of the unknown. You can think of an equation as two expressions joined by an equals sign. Inequalities are like equations, except that the equal sign is replaced by <, >, ≤, or ≥.
