2. You go to a movie that costs six dollars. After the movie you have $3.50 in your pocket. How much did you have before you went to the movie?
3. You can type 90 words per minute on your computer. How many words can you type in an hour, assuming no breaks or fatigue?
4. An 8-1/2 ounce bag of chips says there are 9 chips per serving and that there are "about 8 servings" in the bag. About how many chips are in the bag?
5. You work 10 hours on Monday and were paid $9/hour for the first eight hours and double-time ($18/hour) for the rest. How much did you earn?
ANSWERS
1. $74/2 = $37.
2. $3.50 + $6.00 = $9.50.
3. 90 words/minute times 60 minutes = 90 times 60 = 5400 words.
4. 9 chips/serving times 8 servings = 9 times 8 = 72. Notice that the 8-1/2 ounces is not needed.
5. 10 - 8 = 2. Pay = (8 hours times $9/hour) plus (2 hours times $18/hour) = $72 + $36 = $108.
