QUESTIONS
QUESTIONS
1. What does a pie chart show?
2. You are shown a histogram showing the grades of students in a class. As best you can eyeball the histogram, it show that about 35 students made an A, about 45 students made a B, about 40 students made a C, about 25 students made a D, and about 15 students made an F. The question will ask whether the number of students making D's and F's was less than, equal to, or greater than the number of students making A's and B's.
3. A pie chart shows the distribution of expenses in a monthly budget. If 43% of expenses go for salaries and 17% go for employee benefits, what proportion of the budget goes for these two items?
4. If you want to graph a collection of information showing how height changes with age, which kind of chart would show more detail: a) a line chart showing year-by-year height, or b) a histogram (bar chart) showing average height for five-year intervals of age? Which chart would probably be easier to read?
5. A pie chart says that 24% of a person's budget should be spent for credit card debt. The entire budget is $2500. How much should be spent for credit card debt?
6. A histogram shows that a company sells $6500/month online, $13,000/month through its catalog, and $10,000/month in its store. Does the store sell (more than or less than) the combined amount of catalog and online sales?
ANSWERS
1. If you have a group of people or things with, say, four or five different characteristics, a pie chart show the relative size of the subgroups with different characteristics.
2. You eyeball the histogram and see that the number of students making A's and B's was 45 plus 40, and that the number of students making D's and F's was 25 plus 15. So 25 + 15 = 40 is less than 45 + 40 = 85. Less than.
3. 43% plus 17% = 60%. The proportion is 60/100, or 6/10.
4. The line graph would show more detail, year by year, but the histogram would probably be easier to read.
5. 24% of $2500 is .24 x $2500 = $600.
6. The catalog and online sales total $19,500/month. This is more than the store total of $100,000/month.
