WP10
Creating Two Equations
If a word problem has two unknown quantities, you will almost always have to create two equations to solve it. The two equations have to capture two different relationships between the two unknowns. Once you have the two equations, you can solve by substituting a version of the simpler equation into the other one, thereby eliminating one of the unknowns. When you know one unknown, you can use either equation to solve for the other unknown.
These problems are all similar. If you work through the lessons and the practice questions, you have a good chance of handling such problems on the test.
