Slope of a Line
There are two parts to getting the slope right: the sign of the slope and the amount of the slope:
- First, you need to determine the sign of the slope. If the line rises upward to the right, the slope is positive. If the line falls downward to the right, the slope is negative. If the line is flat (horizontal) the slope is zero. If the line is vertical, the slope is infinity.
- Second, you need to determine the amount of the slope. For any two points on the line, this is the amount of vertical change (in y) divided by the amount of horizontal change (in x). This formula is on the drop-down formula page built into the test.
If you start with two points on a graph (two pairs of numbers x and y) then the slope is the difference in the two y-values divided by the difference in the two x-values. Some word problems on the test will require you to understand the slope of a line.
